<image:title>Jessica Pearce Rotondi - What We Inherit: A Secret War And A Family’s Search For Answers</image:title>
<image:caption>Published April 21, 2020 by Unnamed Press. Order from your local bookstore here. Order on Amazon here. In the wake of her mother’s death, Jessica Pearce Rotondi uncovers boxes of letters, declassified CIA reports, and newspaper clippings that bring to light a family ghost: her uncle Jack, who disappeared during the CIA-led “Secret War” in Laos in 1972. The letters lead her across Southeast Asia in search of the truth that has eluded her family for decades. What she discovers takes her closer to the mother she lost and the mysteries of a secret war that changed the rules of engagement forever.</image:caption>

<image:title>What We Inherit, The Book - Praise for What We Inherit:</image:title>
<image:caption>“Part memoir, part investigative journalism, and completely engrossing, What We Inherit is not a book you’ll be forgetting anytime soon.” —O, The Oprah Magazine (Selected as one of their must-read books of summer 2020) "Everything about What We Inherit is unexpected and compelling…as breathtaking as any spy movie.” —The LA Review of Books “Rotondi deftly moves between the personal and the historical, and the book is a sensitive and searching examination of the ways loss and trauma live on through generations.” —The Boston Globe “A beautiful amalgam of memoir, travelogue, and investigative report that moves with the propulsive forward energy of a thriller. A haunting chronicle of loss and redemption.” —Pulitzer Prize Winner Ron Chernow, author of Alexander Hamilton</image:caption>

<image:title>PRESS - STARRED Kirkus Review</image:title>
<image:caption>“The author’s precise attention to detail conjures up the jungle heat and humidity as well as the pervasive poverty that plagues Laos, and she effectively captures her family’s daily struggle and the toll their quest took on their personal health. The narrative is moving and dramatic as the author shares the alternately heartbreaking and triumphant moments of this intergenerational search for the truth. At intervals in the well-written text, Rotondi also shares details about the CIA’s ‘Secret War’ in Laos, where, “‘between 1964 and 1973, the United States dropped two million tons of cluster bombs…a planeload of bombs every 8 minutes, 24 hours a day, for nine years.’”</image:caption>

The unexpected journey took her from her childhood home in Massachusetts to the lush mountains of Laos, where her airman uncle was shot down in 1972”.</image:caption>

<image:title>EVENTS - 2/16 @ 6 PM: Legacies Library Launch</image:title>
<image:caption>What We Inherit is the inaugural book in the Legacies Library, a collection of works about the U.S. bombing of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam organized by Legacies of War. Legacies of War is a tireless advocate and source of funding for the removal of bombs in Laos. At the current rate, it will take at least 100 years to arrive at a day when families won't have to worry that their children will be killed from unexploded ordnance left over from a CIA-led war fought over 40 years ago. We can change that. I loved speaking with Legacies Executive Director Sera Koulabdara about the impact of the U.S. bombing of Laos and how we might find a way forward.</image:caption>

<image:title>EVENTS - 4/21: Strand Bookstore Reading</image:title>
<image:caption>I moved to New York when I was 21 to work in book publishing. I could barely afford to-go coffee, but I'd go to readings almost every night. I loved being surrounded by old books and my literary heroes in The Strand's Rare Book Room. I was looking forward to launching my own book, #WhatWeInherit, with Kate Bolick in that same room at Strand Book Store, a magical place that has meant so much to me as a reader and as a New Yorker. When The Strand had to close its doors and the reading was cancelled due to COVID-19, I was sad for New York and the bookstore's brilliant staff. I resigned myself to not being able to share my family's story. Then The Strand reached out and let me broadcast a reading across their powerful digital channels. The Strand posted a video of me reading from “What We Inherit” on their Instagram page @StrandBookStore https://bit.ly/StrandReading and on their Facebook page here.</image:caption>

<image:title>EVENTS - 5/31 @ 11 AM: An Inheritance of Grief: Memory, Serendipity, and the Legacy of Two Fallen Soldiers</image:title>
<image:caption>Historian Bethany Groff Dorau and journalist Jessica Pearce Rotondi, both from West Newbury, share the experience of deep engagement with fallen soldiers whose loss haunted and fractured families for generations. For Dorau, author of “A Newburyport Marine,” a chance encounter led to the discovery of intimate letters, personal diaries, photographs and military records, held by people across the world who had not forgotten Eben Bradbury, a young Marine killed in the bloody battle of Belleau Wood in 1918. For Rotondi, author of "What We Inherit: A Secret War and a Family's Search for Answers," boxes of letters, declassified CIA reports, and newspaper clippings discovered after her mother’s death led her deep into the mystery surrounding the death of her uncle Jack during the CIA-led “Secret War” in Laos in 1972. Join these two for a lively chat about memory, mystery, and how these deaths changed everything for those left behind.</image:caption>

<image:title>EVENTS - 10/18 @ 11:15 AM: Brattleboro Literary Festival, “Uncovering the Past”</image:title>
<image:caption>Families are complicated and the people you are closest to are often the ones you understand the least. In the wake of her mother’s death, Jessica Pearce Rotondi, author of What We Inherit, uncovers boxes of letters, declassified CIA reports, and newspaper clippings that bring to light a family ghost: Her Uncle Jack, who disappeared during the CIA-led “Secret War” in Laos in 1972. The letters lead her across Southeast Asia in search of the truth that has eluded her family for decades. What she discovers takes her closer to the mother she lost and the mysteries of a secret war that changed the rules of engagement forever. Maya Shanbhag Lang grew up idolizing her mother, an accomplished physician who immigrated to the United States from India and completed her residency, all while raising her children and keeping a traditional Indian home. She had always been a source of support—until Maya became a mother herself. Then, the parent who had once been so attentive became distant. Struggling to understand this abrupt change, Maya learns that her mother is living with Alzheimer’s. Stepping in to care for her mother, she comes to realize that despite their closeness, she never really knew her mother. What We Carry is the story of a daughter and her mother, of lies and truths, of receiving and giving care—and how we cannot grow up until we fully understand the people who raised us.</image:caption>

<image:title>Speaking - Testimonials</image:title>
<image:caption>“Jessica was a speaker at the Newburyport Literary Festival in April 2020. At a time when the world was scrambling to transition to online events, Jessica made it look effortless. She is a dynamic, high energy speaker, and her professional poise combined with her personal, emotional story created a very engaging discussion transcending the layer of technology between Jessica and her audience. Jessica’s session was the highest-attended event of our festival and attracted the most viewers via our FB livestream of any festival author that year. I hope Jessica will join us again at future festivals!” — Jennifer Entwistle, Director, Newburyport Literary Festival “Jessica’s ability to immediately connect with the audience is clear. The Q&A box lit up moments after Jessica first started speaking. Perhaps because history books are often not this personal, audience members told me they felt like they knew Jessica and her family. They found her poised, her account compelling, and her decision to speak brave. Jessica even fielded pitches during the event to turn What We Inherit into a documentary and to use her book in a college course on nonfiction writing! The event sparked a connection with my own family as we told stories into the night of our own shared love and loss.” — Karen Shapiro, Board Member, The Brown University Club in New York "Jessica Pearce Rotondi is a delight. She gave a virtual talk at my library during the pandemic on her first book, What We Inherit. Her thorough knowledge of and deep emotional connection to the material really came across, and she was able to engage our patrons in a way I have rarely seen in virtual author talks. They absolutely loved her. She is professional, punctual, thorough, and an excellent communicator." — Librarian, Brooklyn Public Library “In these difficult times of a pandemic, social injustice, and isolation, I wanted to bring in a speaker who would tell their journey of hope, resilience, and inspiration. Jessica brought all that and more with her as she shared What We Inherit with our employees.” — Nancy Koshiyama, Senior Vice President of People, Prealize Health “Jessica joined our first virtual author event as part of the House of Beautiful Business Living Room Sessions. Being together apart with 100 strangers carefully listening was a moment of intimacy and aliveness we will always remember.” — Monika Jiang, Head of Content and Community, The Business Romantic Society, Berlin, Germany “During a pandemic Zoom session, my students and I had the pleasure of Jessica's insights on the writing and publication process. Jessica is an intelligent, passionate, and compassionate speaker, connecting with students as a whole and directly by thoughtfully answering their individual questions. I highly recommend Jessica as a speaker!” — Cynthia Cromwell, Honors English Teacher, Pentucket High School</image:caption>
